OpenAI opened the Decisions API to all developers in public beta on 6 October 2026 (announcement, 17:53 BRT; changelog). It was announced at DevDay on 29 September as a limited preview.

What shipped

  • Endpoint: POST /v1/decisions. gpt-6-luna is “the only model currently available”. SDK support from Python 3.26.0, JavaScript 7.30.0, Go 3.73.0, Ruby 0.101.0 and Java 4.78.0.
  • Question types: predicate (probability that a condition is true), choice (one of your options, with probabilities) and score (probability-weighted average over ordered levels). Text, images or both as input.
  • Price: $0.10 per 1M input tokens. No output, cache-read or cache-write charges. Long-context and regional-processing multipliers still apply.
  • Status: public beta; OpenAI “expect[s] to GA in the coming weeks”. The guide is public.

First independent number

Benchmark Heaven ran it on a fresh sealed set plus the public items and put it on the JevBench API board (revision v1.7.10, 6 Oct): Composite 62.5 (#5), 95% interval 51.6–64.6, Capability 73.5 (#4 among Jev-class APIs), Intelligence 56.9, Calibration 90.1. That is behind Sage (74.0), d1 (73.0) and Jev (71.5), and statistically tied with Instinct (62.2). Cost on the board: $0.052 per 1,000 decisions, 1.6× Jev.

Still not a catalog model

OpenAI documents a model (gpt-6-luna) and an interface, not decision-trained weights or a decision head. Under our criteria it stays a hosted decision interface over an LLM: the runtime page is updated from “limited preview” to public beta, and it stays off the quadrant. “10x faster than the Responses API” remains an UnverifiedClaim.

Not to be confused with Perplexity’s Decisions API (also POST /v1/decisions, serving pplx-decider) or OpenRouter’s.
